Search engine optimization is the technique in which a website is seen by sites such as Google™, bing™, YAHOO! and others to represent the site to users who search a particular term.
These are used to search something specific. once he enters the words , he comes across various results. Basically, the sites which meets certain criteria of search engines are listed on top and with less are left behind. The better "optimized" a website is, the better the search engine results, and ideally the higher the positioning.

No need to say that the most prominent sites which holds the first and second positions will receive the greatest amount of traffic to their websites for that specific keyword.
Other sites on the first page of the results might do okay but by the second, third and succeeding pages, they is no hope that anyone will find the results, thus the site will be absent of natural or organic traffic, the terms used to describe traffic given freely by the search engines.
Some results really has nothing to do with the searched term or keyword. These type of sites are called "spam" and use dirty tricks to worm their way to the top positions. Honest webmasters, however, review their sites, tweaking and finessing them until the desired search engine optimized results are obtained.
This is called "whitehat" and is different from "blackhat" because they actually have something to offer potential users. Blackhat techniques are the nasty little deeds used with only one purpose in mind - to make money at whatever cost! An example would be writing the keyword one hundred times at the bottom of the web page.
Generally speaking, once discovered, the search engines will limit or ban these domains since they are of no value to anyone in terms of useful information.
